Electric Vehicle Charging 101
Charging Levels Explained
-
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 charging uses a plug that connects from your car into a typical household outlet (120V). It charges your car around 4 miles/hour so to fully charge a typical 300 mile range car, it will take 3 days.
-
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 is 240V and is used both for business and residential. At around 30 miles/hour, it can charge a typical 300 mile range car to 80% in 8-10 hours, depending on the charger’s battery output and the vehicle’s battery efficiency. Most businesses, hotels, shopping complexes, multi-family facilities, universities, etc use this option of charging.
-
Level 3 Charging
Level 3, also know as DC Fast Charging, is the fastest way to charge your electric vehicle. These stations are usually in public locations near interstates and require commercial-grade higher voltage electrical infrastructure to operate. Charging is as fast as 3 miles/minute and most EVs can be charged to 80% in under 30 minutes.
If I decide to charge to charge, what should be the rates?
The US average rate is $0.384/kWh as of November 2025. In the Southeast USA, the average rates charged to EV drivers to charge is between $0.35/kWh and $0.45/kWh.
